Life Jackets & PFDs for New Zealand Waters

Choosing the right life jacket or PFD for New Zealand conditions is about more than just buying something that floats. The type you need depends on where you're going, what you're doing, and who's wearing it. Get it right and it's something you'll barely notice. Get it wrong and it may not perform when you need it most.

At Swim Safe, we stock a range of life jackets, buoyancy aids and PFD belts from trusted brands including Yak, Crewsaver, RFD, Connelly and Restube, covering everything from inshore boating and kayaking through to open water swimming and water sports. Every product in our range meets the relevant safety standards for use in New Zealand waters.

Not sure what the difference is between a life jacket and a buoyancy aid? Our guide to life jackets vs buoyancy aids explains the key differences.

Which PFD Do You Need?

Inshore boating - harbours, lakes and protected coastal waters: For recreational boating on inshore waters, a Type 402 life jacket with 71N or more buoyancy is the recommended choice. The RFD Sirocco Type 402 and Crewsaver Spiral 100N are both solid options here. They provide collar-assisted buoyancy designed to keep you face-up in the water and are suitable for adults and children.

Kayaking, SUP and paddle sports: For active paddle sports on rivers, lakes and coastal waters, a buoyancy aid with 50-60N is the practical choice. The Yak range is purpose-built for paddling, with designs that allow full arm movement without compromising on safety. The Yak Xipe 60N and High Back 60N suit regular paddlers, while the Yak Blaze and Kallista are great entry-level options for recreational use.

Water sports - wakeboarding, waterskiing and tow sports: For tow sports and high-impact water activities, a close-fitting neoprene PFD vest is the standard. The Connelly Neo range is designed specifically for this use, offering impact resistance and freedom of movement. Available for adults, youth and infants.

Open water swimming and beach safety: Restube's inflatable PFD belts are a compact, wearable option for ocean swimmers, triathletes and anyone spending time in open water. Worn around the waist, they deploy instantly when needed. The Restube Active 75N suits open water swimmers and active water sports users, while the Restube Beach 50N is ideal for recreational beach swimming.

Children and infants Foam life jackets are always the recommended choice for children over inflatable options. Fit is critical. The jacket should be snug with no more than two finger-widths of gap at the shoulders, and should always include a crotch strap to prevent riding up. We stock options for infants, kids and youth across the RFD Sirocco, Connelly and Yak Kallista and Blaze ranges.

Wear It

According to Water Safety New Zealand, 90% of craft-related drowning deaths involve people who were not wearing a lifejacket at the time. Having one on board is not enough. By the time you realise you need it, putting it on may not be possible.

Whatever activity you're heading out for, wear your PFD. It's the single most effective thing you can do to stay safe on the water.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a life jacket and a buoyancy aid?

A life jacket is designed to keep you afloat and face-up even if you are unconscious. It provides higher buoyancy (71N and above) and is the recommended choice for boating on open or inshore waters. A buoyancy aid provides lower buoyancy (typically 50-60N) and is designed for active, competent swimmers in supervised or controlled conditions such as kayaking or SUP. Choosing the right one depends on your activity, the conditions, and how far you are from help. For a detailed breakdown, see our life jackets vs buoyancy aids guide.

What Newton rating do I need for my life jacket in NZ?

It depends on your activity. 50N suits calm-water paddlesports for competent swimmers. 60N is appropriate for active kayaking, SUP and coastal paddling. 100N and above is recommended for inshore recreational boating on harbours and lakes. 150N is required for offshore or open ocean use. The further you are from help and the more exposed the conditions, the higher the buoyancy rating you should choose.

Do I have to wear a life jacket by law in New Zealand?

All recreational vessels are required to carry enough life jackets for everyone on board. Many regional councils in New Zealand also require life jackets to be worn on vessels 6 metres and under. Requirements vary by region, so it is worth checking your local council bylaws. Regardless of legal requirements, Water Safety New Zealand strongly recommends wearing a life jacket whenever you are on the water.

What life jacket do I need for kayaking in NZ?

For kayaking in New Zealand, a buoyancy aid with 50-60N buoyancy is the standard recommendation. Look for a design with full arm mobility and a secure, adjustable fit. The Yak Xipe 60N and Yak High Back 60N are purpose-built for paddlesports and are popular choices. For children kayaking, the Yak Kallista Kids or Yak Blaze Kids are well-suited options. Inflatable life jackets are not recommended for kayaking as they require activation and may not deploy quickly enough in the water.

What is the best PFD for stand up paddleboarding (SUP) in NZ?

For SUP, you want a buoyancy aid that allows full arm movement without restriction. The Yak Xipe 60N is our favourite for its feature-packed design and paddling-specific fit. A PFD Belt is also worth considering for experienced paddlers. It's worn around the waist and can be manually deployed when needed, keeping it completely out of the way while you paddle. Under Maritime NZ guidelines, a PFD must be on your body or within immediate reach while SUP boarding on coastal waters.

What life jacket should I buy for my child?

For children, always choose a foam life jacket rather than an inflatable. Foam life jackets provide buoyancy without requiring any action to activate, which is critical in an emergency. The jacket should fit snugly with no more than two finger-widths of gap at the shoulders and must include a crotch strap to prevent it riding up. We stock options for infants, kids and youth from RFD, Connelly and Yak. If you are unsure of sizing, contact us and we will help you find the right fit.

Can I use a water sports PFD vest for boating?

Neoprene PFD vests like the Connelly Neo range are designed for high-impact water sports such as water skiing and wakeboarding, where impact resistance and freedom of movement are the priority. They are not classified as Type 402 life jackets and are not a substitute for a life jacket when boating on inshore or open waters. For boating, a Type 402 life jacket is the appropriate choice.
